In This Little Pattern of Houses

Winter is definitely still winning, and although the cold is wearing, how refreshing it is to step outside and walk around my neighborhood. I realize I won't always live in this little pattern of houses, so its important to me to notice the subtle things that one might otherwise just pass by. Like the homes with old red brick, some revealing cracks, others covered in ivy, faded yet steadfast against the bitter cold winter and extreme heat of July. Or the trees with roots and a fullness that says they've been there longer than the families that live only meters away, grown to shelter the streets, provide shade in the summer, a fluttering of leaves and piles below come fall, and a stark silhouette against the setting winter sun.
Its important to notice these things, and store up little anecdotes like how that one house always has that one dog, and how come night or day, rain or shine, he stands watch just waiting to stick his damp charcoal nose through the fence and let me know who's boss. Or how the bookstore down the way always has a Barbara Kingsolver title setting in its window display, reminding me of my favorite tales of family and daughters in her book The Poisonwood Bible, while also nudging me to finish my never-ending read of The Prodigal Summer. And how the alleyways are like little galleries, a collection of street art, or plant art, or patterns of burnt and ash against walls that have taken their stand on these Denver streets, through and through--seeing their fair share of trash, ferrel cats, and broken glass sparkling, scattered, reflecting the bright Colorado sun.
Its important to package it all up, so I don't forget. Its important so that I can remember to be thankful for these winter walks, in this little pattern of houses, on these days where the sun always seems to be two hours ahead--where I am chasing it, asking for one more hour, one more glimpse of warmth. Winter is still winning, and when I catch up to its setting sun, I see the beauty of its early slumber, the melancholy of the winter night sounds, and the hope that winter instills--of warmth, of growth, of Spring.

Rooftop Blues Party | Photography

When my friend Aubrey asked me to photograph her and Matt for their Christmas card this year, I was one so flattered, and two thrilled. You see, if I'm completely real, I wish that photographing people was my job (that, or any work that captures the beauty of life). I love capturing moments in such a tangible form as photographs. And for my first official request to play photographer, it was perfect because Aubrey is super dynamic and pretty much a dream to photograph with her joyful personality overflowing on film. And her and Matt's love for each other is as clear as day. She wanted a downtown setting, since their lives are completely centered around it, so when Aubrey planned a rooftop birthday celebration at Denver's Museum of Contemporary Art, it was pretty obvious where these photographs needed to be taken - on the rooftopThis is just a little sneak peek. You can see why I loved photographing these two. They're adorable and the setting (that wood!) was just to die for.

Oh Football, What I Never Knew

Football. It is like a foreign country that I never had a ticket to or a tour guide to show me the ins and outs of. But after marrying a man who gets his mind wrapped into stats and fantasy teams, I've had to pack my suitcase and venture to this land, and learn the ways of the culture and the excitement. And if I am completely honest, I would tell you that I never understood it. I never understood why football was such a big deal. I never understood, but I never lived in a town with a professional football team--ahem, Los Angeles. You see, I grew up near a city where cars out number people, or so it seemed on certain days while inching along on freeways. I grew up near a city where walking to sporting events, catching the light rail, or riding your bike was just crazy to think of. I grew up near a city where there was more conversation about shows at the Hollywood Bowl, movie premiers, and the Rose Bowl Flea. I grew up near a city where professional football only existed on television, or in stadiums far far away. So all the other aspects that make the community and camaraderie of the sport come alive, and the city light up on game day--well, they were non existent to me...
Football was like a foreign country, and then I moved to Denver. Where even the trees turn orange because, well, its Bronco country. And I'm learning that football is quite enjoyable. I really underestimated it, or perhaps just never gave it a chance. But I'm getting it, and Matt is teaching me (ever so patiently as I have asked about downs and points and rules more than any normal person). Football, live football, is so much about the process. The morning downtown leading up to game time. The walk to the train and the vendors on the trek in. The families, couples, and number one fans all mixed together, in a sea of orange. The bag of kettle con passed down the seats and back again. The singing of our nation's anthem. High-fiving complete strangers. Its something I never really knew football to be. And really, its more than the sport--it's the way this city loves each other when there is a game. The sound of excitement and the thrill that you hear all weekend long. This might not be new to you, but I've never experienced that before. Until Denver, I've never truly known football--and now, slowly, my heart might be changing. I started as a tourist in this new land, and now I may decide to stay awhile, to become--dare I say it--a traveler with the desire to know the ins and outs of football as if I were a local.

Go Broncos!

Time Away

Can I be honest? I am feeling a little bit disconnected from my Denver life. Right when I get back in the swing, its time to travel again - which has been amazing - but at the same time, I feel my home life has been neglected a bit. Because of that, I've decided I'm going to unplug. A few days to soak in these last moments of summer are much needed. With no distractions and time to center myself and have a little quality one on one with this city, with these little moments, and with my family, the people at work, and everything else that I feel like I've been too busy for lately. My first priority is to not be too busy for the simple things, because that is what life is made up of--and I feel like I have been. Can you relate? My weekend in California opened my eyes to this, as I probably spent more time laughing and enjoying the little moments these past few days unplugged than I have in a while. And its been good to feel that. I want that feeling that found me in California this past weekend to meet me right here in Denver.

I've been writing for the Love Yourself Linkup each Tuesday, and I think this is the way I need to love myself right now: by stepping away and re-shifting my focus. My cousin's baby is due any day. We have friends who just moved here. A cross country road trip is just around the corner. I have design endeavors I want to explore. On top of so many other things that I don't want to miss. So, friends, I'll be back in a bit. Maybe a day or two, maybe a week. See you soon!

(& in the meantime, check out some other bloggers listed in the right column under "Reading List" or the amazing women who link up with the Love Yourself and Choose Beauty Linkup each week).

Print-Like Denver Oil Painting

For our four year anniversary this past May, I painted Matt his gift, rather than buying it. The man loves maps, so I set out to make a print-style oil painting of the state of Colorado. With a heart placed over the very spot we now call home: Denver.
This piece of art has been a long time coming. Two words: oil paint. If you've used oil on canvas, you know that oil takes patience and time. So much time. So much patience. And so much mess. (Oil based paints are my favorite thing to clean....said no one ever). The day I set out to paint this print-like map, I wanted to have the piece done and setting in our living room within 24 hours. Talk about setting way too high of expectations for myself. That, let alone trying to defy the properties of oil paint. I'm fairly certain this canvas sat on our kitchen counter for more than 24 days. Ha, 24 hours? Who was I kidding. Between the layers and the waiting for everything to dry between applications-- well, let's just say this canvas has been waiting to join the others for far too long now.

Denver Adventures | Summer Lately

You may have noticed that I have definitely been lagging on the DIY front, but you guys, I'm not to blame. Denver is. It has been too gorgeous out lately to not spend our free time in and around the city. And so many places to go! Having lived in four cities our first four years of marriage, my perspective has changed a bit. I took those towns for granted, and looking back, I wish we would have explored more, deepened our roots further, and known the ins and outs of our towns when we lived in them so darn well that we could have written a book about them. I don't know how long we will be in Denver --city proper-- and there are so many things on my to do list. Still, after a year, adventures in this city linger while nooks wait to be yet experienced. So lately, this summer, we have been doing just that--taking the opportunity to explore and get out!

Red, white, blue.

My favorite place EVER watching fireworks was July 4th on the beach of South Lake Tahoe. You could see firework shows all around the lake, up close, and off in the distance. Tomorrow we celebrate all that is America. Our freedom. Our rights. Our duty as civilians. I feel proud, do you?

Our plans tomorrow so far are a long lazy morning, a walk around City Park, and afternoon BBQ with friends, and a night enjoying America's pastime: Baseball! It's Dodgers vs. Rockies! And fireworks at Coors Field. (the last time we saw The Dodgers, this happened) What are you up to?

Also, I was told at work today by multiple preschoolers that I look like an American flag in my dress. Yes! My patriotic mission--accomplished.

--end housekeeping. onto summer dreaming.--

One of my all time favorite memories in our first year here in Denver, is from a Saturday last summer when we went tubing down the Boulder Creek river with our neighbors. Matt ran to Wal Mart the morning of this impromptu tubing adventure, to find only one tube left of the shelves. He bought a tube for me, and a little inflatable boat for himself (see here). This is where things started to get pretty funny. As you can probably imagine, a 6 foot 3 man in a child size boat floating down a rocky creek was a sight to behold. That, and my friend Lauren braved the rapids with her dog in tow, the little cattle dog pup sitting on her lap the entire way down the creek.

Rusty Metal ABCs

I felt like Mike and Frank from American Pickers as I came across this vendor at the Outdoor Pop Up Market on Saturday. A serious pot of gold, in the form of rusty metal and peeling paint. Some old signage letters, and others vintage scrap metal reclaimed and upcycled--oh the ways they could be incorporated into the home! Are't they a junkyard dream?

Cat Eyes, a Mirror, and Dresses

Eyeliner has never been my forté, but after reading Natalie's post on her cat-eye crush, I could not resist trying the latest trend. My eyes are rather deep set, so liner always annoyingly leaves smudges above my lids ad doesn't seem to stand out. Also, somehow, by the end of the night, my eye liner seems to disappear. Most likely because it rubs off on my eyelids as I blink and what not. After a recommendation from my sister-in-law Morgan to use cream eye liner with a brush, my eye lining problems have become less and less. Morgan always has stunningly done up eyes, and I've always wanted to try her lined look (but never have due to my smudging/liner disappearing problems). Cream eyeliner has proved, for me, to be the easiest to apply, and the most long lasting--especially when paired with an eyelid primer. So with brush, eyeliner in a jar, and primer, I gave the cat eye look a go when I went out for a glass of wine last night with my girlfriends.

Mining towns, phone piles, and a treasury casting call.

On Sunday, we decided to take a drive to some mountain towns nearby, explore a bit, eat, and escape the heat of the city. Our first stop was Idaho Springs, an old mining town with a charming main street. After store front browsing, enjoying the antique signs and old town feel, and spending some change on homemade carmel corn, we stumbled upon a store that was filled with Irish/celtic chotchkies, yes a little random, but in the back of the store an entire room of antiques was to be found! It was a total diamond in the rough, and I will definitely go back when I am in need of something vintage or a project to work on (the prices were pretty good, surprisingly!). I was so busy looking through everything I only got a couple photos. A coca cola crate with Denver, CO painted on the side, an antique roll top desk, and the vintage wooden chairs hanging from the ceiling were some of my favorites. Also, the hidden suit cases buried under books and clutter were fun to look at, and dream about (I would love to buy/thrift one at some point to make this). How was your weekend?
Phone crush.

Ferris wheels and loopty loos.

This weekend Matt's work had a picnic at Elitch Gardens. Although we didn't ride the tall tower, from the top you can see all of downtown Denver before you plummet to the floor. Some of the phone photos I captured made me really want to get a ferris wheel print, like this one I found on Etsy. Wouldn't this be so cute for a nursery or playroom? Happy weekend!
